Here’s a very good biography of the Rev. James Lawson, who passed away today. Rest in power.

Here’s a witness-of-a-substack by Nashville author David Dark, relating back to Lawson:

Robert Horvath is currently a professor at IUPUI in Indiana, and was an art professor associated with Eastern Illinois University while I was a student. He co-led a formative study abroad trip, and is one of the handful of personal artistic mentors in my life, even if it was for a brief period. Please check out his sculptural show in Dallas if you have the chance.
One unrelated memory that I hope he wouldn’t mind me sharing was his description of an in-progress piece as a “puppy-corn, or uni-puppy” in his thick and beautiful Eastern European accent.
This morning I saw my state senator, Shane Reeves, in a gas station. I imagined approaching him to, at the very least, express my disgust with the outcome and behavior of his colleagues in the recent session, and the previous special session involving guns. I wanted to shame him for not fighting for women’s reproductive rights, or calling out his racist house colleagues when they ousted two Black legislators from the Capitol. Could have asked him whether or not he thinks trans people have a right to exist, or whether or not kids should have access- no matter what- to healthy food at lunchtime while in school; whether or not he thinks $8.50 is a livable hourly wage. Also could’ve asked if foster kids have rights, and if public school funding should go to private schools. I did not say a word.
Here’s to more courage in the future, to being present in the moment, and possess even just a little zen lunacy.
